A beloved Halloween tradition in northwest Calgary is coming to an end.
After more than a decade of spooky spectacles, the famed Haunted Panton Way block party in Panorama Hills has been cancelled, leaving many residents disappointed.
For 11 years, Dustin Milne transformed a stretch of the residential street into a Halloween wonderland, complete with elaborate decorations, food trucks, and crowds that swelled into the thousands. But this year, the lights will stay off.
“We had 10,000 people last year,” Milne said. “We had Calgary Police on paid duty.”
“It’s an adult move to buy 14,000 pieces of candy, but that was just part of it. Then we had some complaints over the year. Not enough food trucks, not enough to do. Getting complaints for a free event that we’re throwing out of the goodness of our hearts kind of sours the mood.”
What began as a way to meet neighbours and bring joy to local kids grew into one of Calgary’s largest free Halloween displays. But with the event’s popularity came growing pains—and safety concerns.
“We had people try to go into my house last year,” Milne recalled. “Or taking the boxes of candy off the pallets. So I think we as a society need to do better, and if that turns around, then hey, never say never.”
Despite the challenges, many in the community say they’ll miss the annual tradition.
“We were waiting for it,” one resident said. “Every year I dress up with the kids. I invited my cousins again this year, but I had to tell them there’s no more party.”
Another neighbour added, “Sure, people complained, but it usually wrapped up by 10 or 11. Overall, it was pretty fun. I don’t know why they stopped it.”
For now, Panton Way will remain quiet this Halloween. But Milne hasn’t ruled out a return in the future—leaving the haunted house door slightly ajar.
