Charges upgraded to manslaughter in death of 76-year-old following McDonald’s fight

Calgary Police say a death of a 76-year-old that took place in the city's NW is deemed a homicide and the charges have been upgraded to manslaughter.

Calgary police have upgraded charges to manslaughter in connection with the death of a man following a fight outside a northwest McDonald’s last week.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Oct. 21 in the parking lot of a McDonald’s near Crowfoot Way and Nose Hill Drive NW.

Officers responded to reports of a fight between two men in their 70s. Upon arrival, both individuals declined medical assistance and further police involvement.

After confirming the situation had de-escalated and that one of the men had left the restaurant, police cleared the scene.

Less than two hours later, emergency crews were called back to the same location for a medical emergency involving one of the men from the earlier altercation.

Kwok Leung Lau, 76, was found in medical distress and transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition. He died two days later.

Chiu Man Yuen, 79, was initially charged with aggravated assault following the confrontation. Police now say Lau’s death has been deemed a homicide, and Yuen is facing a new charge of manslaughter.

Police confirmed that the victim and the accused were known to each other. Investigators also believe a third person may have intervened during the fight and are urging that person, along with any other witnesses, to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
