Mounties in Cochrane arrested a Calgary man they suspect of drug trafficking and connected to an overdose death in the Stoney Nakoda Nations in early October.
An investigation into the potential source of the drugs began after the death in the Mînî Thnî area of Stoney Nakoda Nations west of Calgary was reported.
Police were then able to identify a suspected drug trafficker living in Calgary. Cochrane RCMP then coordinated with Calgary Police Services to advance the investigation.
This led them to arrest 58-year-old Randall Arsenault on Oct. 29 and seize around 70 grams of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
While investigators weren’t able to confirm the origin of the substances that contributed to the suspected overdose death, Mounties say the investigation “underscores the serious risks associated with the illegal drug trade in our communities.”
Meanwhile, officers are charging Arsenault with two offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Those are trafficking a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.
Arsenault was held for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Nov. 5, 2025.
The press release also included a thank you from the Cochrane RCMP to CPS for their collaboration in the investigation.
