The red poppy has become a symbol of remembrance in Canada, but it also serves another important purpose. Each poppy handed out during the annual campaign helps raise money for veterans and their families.
Behind every poppy worn in November are stories of service and sacrifice, a reminder of the people who stood for Canada, both at home and overseas.
“Some of our veterans don’t have that physical capacity, or mental capacity, to volunteer, and some of our veterans also don’t even consider themselves veterans. There is a large group that say, ‘Well, I didn’t fight in a war, so I’m not a veteran, and that’s not true at all,” explained Ret. Major Kent Griffiths. “I really reach out to them and try to explain to them how being prepared to fight, and having that commitment that if we were to have gone and fought a war during the Cold War. they would’ve been the first ones on the line, so that commitment makes them veterans as well.”
The Royal Canadian Legion continues to lead the annual campaign, with volunteers and donors helping keep the legacy of remembrance alive in Calgary.
“Wearing a poppy indicates that you’ve taken the time to remember,” explained Royal Canadian Legion member Derek Seath. “You’re paying respect to those who have fallen, you’re paying respect to those who serve — in the military today, in the past, and hopefully with some people going into the future.”
Remembrance Day is observed on Nov. 11, with numerous ceremonies behind held in Calgary and across the country.
