Three involved in stolen vehicle takedown face 21 charges: Calgary police

Three people speeding dangerously through the city in a stolen SUV while attempting to evade officers Sunday now face a combined 21 charges, Calgary police say.

Early reports say a Ford Escape, confirmed stolen by CPS, was spotted driving in northeast Falconridge and sped to evade police.

Officers say a HAWCS helicopter was deployed to help de-escalate and track the suspect vehicle, which was driving dangerously and at a “high rate of speed.” They say the driver was barreling through red lights and onto sidewalks — reportedly almost double the speed limit at times.

However, the suspects came to a halt after striking a tire deflation device on Canyon Meadows Drive and Lake Fraser Drive SE. But the three suspects inside jumped out and tried to carjack a nearby bystander, according to police.

It was then that the three were taken into custody. Investigators note one of the suspects had a court-ordered monitoring device removed, and that all three had a combined 28 outstanding warrants.

The three Calgarians, 30-year-old Steben Bradley Desjardins, 39-year-old Kamal Hassan Farah, and 25-year-old Savannag Hailey Ritcher, now face a combined 21 charges, which include possession of stolen property over $5,000 and fleeing police.

Desjardins also faces nine counts of failing to comply with a release order, and a count each of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and driving while prohibited. He also received two offences under the Traffic Safety Act.

The three are expected to appear in court on Nov. 12.
