Carjacker collides with fire truck before police takedown in SE Calgary

On Sunday evening, a man was dropping off his grandchild near the 200 block of Walden Mews SE when a masked man jumped into his vehicle.

A carjacking in Calgary’s southeast on Sunday evening ended with a collision involving a fire truck and a police takedown of the suspect.

At around 5:30 p.m., Calgary police say a man was dropping off his grandchild in the community of Walden when a masked offender suddenly jumped into his vehicle.

Both the man and the child managed to exit safely before the suspect sped away. No injuries were reported.

Less than ten minutes later, witnesses saw the stolen vehicle crash into a power pole near Shawville Road SE and Shawville Boulevard SE.

Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews responded and found the suspect still behind the wheel.

The driver allegedly reversed into a fire truck. Quick action by the fire truck operator pinned the stolen vehicle against the same power pole, preventing further danger.

“Our driver then made the decision that, you know, we have crews that were actively on the scene, this vehicle is trying to flee, there’s that elevated potential for injury and risk,” said Alex Kwan with the CFD. “So, then our driver used the engine to push and pin that vehicle against the light pole so that that vehicle could no longer move.”

Police arrived moments later and extricated the suspect from the vehicle. The 23‑year‑old male driver was taken into custody and now faces multiple charges, including robbery and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
