Calgarians are in for a rollercoaster of weather this week, as temperatures in the city swing from mild conditions on Wednesday to bone-chilling lows by Thursday night, before rebounding to spring-like highs early next week.

Environment Canada is warning of a dramatic shift beginning Wednesday evening. Clouds will roll in, bringing periods of snow and a risk of freezing rain.

Between two and four centimetres of snow is expected overnight, with winds shifting north and gusting up to 60 km/h. Temperatures will plunge to -17 C, with a wind chill near -26.

“Here comes the cold snap,” said 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield. “We have potential freezing rain on Wednesday that could occur close to 8 p.m. Up to five centimetres of flurries are expected that will be mostly wrapped up by Thursday morning.”

Residents are urged to prepare for icy roads and bundle up against frostbite over the next couple of days.

On Thursday, snow will taper off in the morning, giving way to a mix of sun and cloud. But the temperatures will continue to fall, reaching near -20 C by the afternoon. With wind chills approaching -30, the risk of frostbite will be high.

Friday will remain frigid, with a daytime high around -20 C and more snow possible overnight.

But by Saturday, the city will begin to thaw, with highs expected to climb close to 0 C throughout the day. The weather rebound continue Sunday, with sunshine and a forecasted high of 6 C, followed by 7 C on Monday, according to Environment Canada.
