Alberta man charged with assault, extortion after delivery gone wrong

An Alberta man is facing multiple charges after RCMP say a delivery driver was assaulted and threatened with a gun during an appliance delivery gone wrong.

According to Sundre RCMP, officers were called to a rural area near the town after a delivery driver reported being attacked on Dec. 4.

The driver attempted to deliver appliances to the wrong address. After pulling over to contact the intended customer, the customer arrived and demanded that the items be delivered to another location.

When the driver refused, police say the suspect opened the truck door and punched him several times. The suspect then allegedly got a long gun from his vehicle, pointed it at the driver, and threatened to kill him if the delivery was not made.

The victim fled the scene and called police.

Investigators obtained a warrant to search the suspect’s residence. With help from the Southern Alberta Emergency Response Team, officers arrested the suspect and seized 16 firearms — one of them loaded — along with a large quantity of ammunition.

Police identified the suspect as William Fenech, 31, of Sundre. He is facing 14 charges including extortion with a firearm, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and assault.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday.
