Calgary-born ‘Beaches, A New Musical’ to make Broadway debut in spring 2026

In a first for the Calgary theatre scene, a YYC-born show is set to make its opening on Broadway next year.

Beaches, A New Musical made its international premiere at Theatre Calgary in 2024 and will open in New York come spring 2026.

The musical which was made into a blockbuster film starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey based on the book “Beaches” by Iris Rainer Dart and Thom Thomas.

Theatre Calgary artistic director Stafford Arima says he’s excited to see a work developed on a Calgary stage make it to the big leagues.

“When I became the Artistic Director of Theatre Calgary in 2017, it was important for me to find a special project that had the potential to move from Theatre Calgary to Broadway,” he said. “Beaches was that project.“

Producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso says it is worth noting the resources required to premiere a production that makes it to Broadway.

”The fact that Theatre Calgary has the infrastructure, onstage and off, and could accommodate the size, scale and scope of the vision for the show made bringing Beaches to Theatre Calgary the best possible decision,” she said. “As we share this love story about friendship with Broadway audiences, we gratefully carry our time at Theatre Calgary with us.”

Previews for Beaches begin March 27, 2026, ahead of an official opening night on April 22.

The show will play at the historic Majestic Theatre — longtime home of The Phantom of the Opera — until Sept. 6 , 2026.

Tickets will go on sale in January.
