A pair of moose calves were relocated after an altercation with a dog in northwest Calgary on Tuesday.
Alberta Fish & Wildlife (FWES) and Calgary Fire Department crews were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. to Arbour Crest Way NW in the community of Arbour Lake after a call from a resident.
The resident let their dogs into the backyard around 10 p.m. Monday, unaware that two moose calves, a male and female around 1.5 years old, were present in the yard. One of the dogs was kicked by one of the calves and sustained minor injuries.
“Moose may view dogs as potential predators, which likely triggered the pair’s defensive behaviour,” reads a statement from Public Safety and Emergency Services spokesperson. “FWES Calgary had been monitoring the moose for several months, and this was the first reported instance of defensive behaviour.”
FWES officers arrived to the area Tuesday and tranquillized the pair without incident, and no injuries were reported.
The Calgary Fire Department was called in to help move the animals, working alongside Fish & Wildlife officers to load the moose into the back of a truck.
Images from the scene show crews using specialized equipment to carefully lift the animals before securing them for transport.
The pair will be released near the Harold Creek Wildlife Corridor northwest of Calgary.
