Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of starting a fire that forced the closure of a popular downtown Calgary restaurant.
Shortly after 4 a.m. on Wednesday, a fire broke out in the basement crawl space of a building on 10 Avenue SW between 1 and 2 Streets.
The area is home to several bars and restaurants, including Salt & Brick, which has been temporarily closed due to fire damage.
Security footage from the area shows a man walking westbound in the alley just before the fire, carrying what appeared to be a flaming stick.
Police describe the man as thin and of average height. At the time, he was wearing a dark green toque, jeans, a black jacket layered over a grey sweater, and a red bandana tied around his neck.
He was also carrying a black Speedo backpack embroidered with “Calgary Patriots” and was hauling a grey carry-on-sized piece of luggage.
Officials are urging anyone with information to contact police at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
