Calgary Transit has removed a series of 19 shuttle buses after one of them was destroyed by a fire in mid-December.
The incident in question happened on Nose Hill Drive between Stoney Trail and 87 Street NW just after 8 a.m. on Dec. 12.
The city says the cause remains unknown, but an investigation is ongoing. However, the buses are being removed as a precaution.
“This is a standard safety step to ensure there are no risks to staff and the public while we complete the investigation. We will return the shuttles to service once we confirm them to be safe,” a statement from the city reads.
The city’s fire department told 660 NewsRadio the bus driver was the only one on board when they noticed smoke and flames emerge.
After the driver attempted to extinguish the blaze, they abandoned the effort when the flames spread rapidly. Firefighters say the driver escaped without injury, and police add they were assessed and taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Shuttle buses have been deployed in the meantime, with “adjusted schedules to minimize service impacts to riders,” according to the city.
Among several changes to service due to the holidays, the City of Calgary says buses, CTrains, and On Demand will operate on a Sunday-level service for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
