Calgary police announce January photo radar locations

Calgary drivers are getting a heads-up on where they can expect to see photo radar vehicles in the new year.

Throughout January, enforcement will be concentrated in several neighbourhoods across the city, including Cranston, Mahogany, Signal Hill, Tuscany, and several other communities.

The full list of targeted zones includes:

  • Albert Park/Radisson Heights
  • Banff Trail
  • Cranston
  • Elbow Park
  • Erin Woods
  • Glenbrook
  • Mahogany
  • Ogden
  • Sandstone Valley
  • Signal Hill
  • Strathcona Park
  • Tuscany

In addition to community hotspots, photo radar units will also be stationed in construction zones where workers are present. Police continue to stress that these areas remain among the most dangerous for speeding‑related incidents.

Speeding fines in Alberta increase with the driver’s speed over the posted limit. Anyone caught travelling more than 50 km/h over the limit will be required to appear before a judge—an automatic court summons under provincial law.

The city currently operates 57 Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) sites capable of capturing red‑light violations. Five of those locations are also equipped to record speed‑on‑green infractions, allowing enforcement even when drivers accelerate through intersections without triggering a red light.

Police say the January enforcement blitz is part of ongoing efforts to reduce collisions and improve safety for all road users.

In December 2024, the Alberta government announced changes to photo radar rules in the province, prohibiting it on provincial highways and restricting enforcement to school, playground, and construction zones.
