Police have charged a woman after a video circulating online appeared to show a pylon being thrown from a downtown Calgary balcony.
Calgary police say they received several complaints on Monday after the video was posted online around 5 p.m.
The footage, according to police, shows someone tossing a traffic pylon over the edge of a balcony in an apartment building on 3 Street SE between 12 Avenue and 11 Avenue.
Officers found the pylon on the sidewalk below.
Investigators later determined the video had actually been recorded two days earlier, on Saturday, shortly before 12:30 p.m., and that the object had been thrown from the building’s 14th floor.
Using information from social media posts, police identified a suspect and arrested a person at a home in the Livingston community.
“Throwing any object off a high rise is incredibly dangerous,” Staff Sgt. Paul Ralstin said in a statement. “We are lucky nobody was seriously hurt or even killed. By laying these charges, we hope to show how seriously police take crimes that some people think are simply pranks.”
Police estimate the pylon weighs nearly 13 lbs.
A 28‑year‑old Calgary woman has been charged with one count of mischief causing danger to life.
