Take a moment to ask yourself if your job is safe… safe from a shifting labour market, safe from new technologies, safe from AI.
Danielle Hadden, owner of a consignment store for 30 years, continues to see changes that have forced her to adapt her business.
“During COVID, we flipped more to online so that changed the whole vibe of the store because we were getting way more online sales, so it wasn’t people through the door,” she said.
This is a trend that continues for some businesses, resulting in less employees needed.
Recruitment agency Randstad Canada has come up with the most in-demand jobs in Calgary for 2026.
Included in that list are bookkeepers, truck drivers, receptionists, sale associates, and topping the list: administrative assistants.
But according to this research, with each of these positions comes a higher expectation from employers.
“They’ve taken the time to find parking… you know they could go online but they’ve chosen not to so once they get in the door, it’s like, amazing,” Hadden said
Mehak Kaur, who is the co-owner of another Calgary business, agrees that there are somethings technology cannot replace
“Sometimes when a client comes in, they’re not having a good day so when we give them a service, talk to them about their day and they leave with a smile on their face, that’s what really matters in the end,” she said.
While these trends are exclusive to Calgary in 2026, the message appears to be that customer does indeed remain king when it comes to businesses focusing on their satisfaction and you finding a new job
“We want them to come back,” Hadden added.
