A clear and sunny forecast is in Calgary’s cards this week, maintaining a warm stretch that will see double-digit days starting Monday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) reported high temperatures between 8 and 10 C on Saturday and Sunday, which is due to a shift from an upper ridge developing over the Prairies to the west.
Meteorologist Rob Griffiths told 660 NewsRadio previously that warmer air will then build from the south, and Chinook-like winds will also add to the trend.
The ECCC said Sunday that Calgary will see clear skies and highs in the double digits right up until Wednesday, Jan. 14, at around 15 C. It will then drop to single digits on Thursday and Friday, then climb back up to 13 C on Saturday.
Calgary’s average high and low at this time of year are around -3 C and -15 C, respectively, according to the ECCC. The highest recorded temperature on Jan. 14 was 11 C in 2004.
Winds on Sunday will gust from 30-60 kilometres per hour late into the evening, and again into Monday morning — increasing to 50-80 kilometres per hour before dropping back down.
Griffiths also said that Calgarians shouldn’t get carried away by early long-range forecasts showing mid-teen temperatures.
“I’d be cautious of putting too much stock into those mid-teen to high-teen daytime highs we’re seeing in the early extended forecast,” he said. “But it does look like it will be much nicer next week.”
Meanwhile, Calgarians should be aware that walkways, parking lots, and roadways might be icier than usual because of the freezing and thawing that is expected to happen.
