Nine people were able to evacuate a detached home in Calgary’s Cornerstone community Wednesday morning when it caught fire.
Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Alistair Robin says crews responded to 8 Cornergate Place NE started around 5:45 a.m.
One of the five people living in the main floor of the house was awake and making lunch in the kitchen, which is on the backside of the house, when they saw a flicker of light through the blinds.
The rest of the upstairs residents and the four people living in the basement were then alerted to the fire.
When crews arrived, they found a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the back of the home.
Firefighters continued to work on putting out the flames as of 6:45 a.m.
“It did spread to the back of the house, burned up the back of the house, but we’re unsure of conditions prior to that and unsure of cause and origin,” Robin explained.
He says most of the damage is concentrated to the back of the house, but some of the home’s right side is burned.
It’s unclear if the home is inhabitable.
There were no pets inside the home at the time of the fire.
No injuries have been reported.
A fire investigator is on scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
