Traffic stop in Calgary’s Beltline leads to drug, gun charges for 40-year-old man and teenage girl

Calgary police have charged a man and a teenage girl with multiple drug and weapon offences, following a traffic stop in southwest Calgary.

A man and a teenager are facing a combined 40 charges after being pulled over in Calgary’s Beltline last weekend.

Police say just before 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, officers pulled over a vehicle near 17 Avenue SW and 5 Street SW.

A 40-year-old man was driving and a 16-year-old girl was in the passenger seat.

According to police, the man had no licence, and officers saw an open alcohol container in the vehicle.

Officers then searched the vehicle, and found a loaded shotgun, knives, pepper spray, $4,650 in cash, as well as $10,000 worth of illegal drugs.

Matthew Christian Bennett is facing several charges, including possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

The teenager, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and more.

Bennett was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 21.

The youth was released on bail and is set to make a court appearance on Jan. 26.
