Calgarians checked out 17.5 million books in 2025, the highest circulation on record, the Calgary Public Library (CPL) announced Monday.
In a news release, CPL says more than 11 million of them were physical copies, with the remaining 6.5 million being digital copies.
Over 7 million people visited 22 locations in 2025, with the library adding that it currently has more than 815,000 active members.
Additionally, the CPL says nearly 8,500 programs and 368,00 community members attended events and outreach initiatives
“Our service numbers continue to show that Calgary Public Library remains a critical resource and community hub for Calgarians,” said Sarah Meilleur, CEO of Calgary Public Library.
“As we look to the future, there is much to be excited about as well. While our members are reading more than ever before, we’re also seeing huge demand for technology services and community space.”
In 2025, the library says it helped in the civic engagement department by holding events and providing information related to both the federal and municipal elections.
Other numbers include 2.5 million print jobs, 1.1 million Wi-Fi sessions, and visitors sat down at a computer or with a laptop 537,223 times.
“Each of these numbers represents a moment. Moments like a young child checking out their first book and discovering the magic of reading. Moments like a newcomer finding community and support at Drop-in English Practice. Or moments that simply connect us to new thoughts and ideas,” says Meilleur.
CPL says it plans for growth and expansion in 2026, with plans for upgrades, renovations, and new locations.
