Calgary police say human remains that were found in the city’s northeast late last year belong to a senior who went missing two years prior.
They say someone reached out to police on Oct. 10, 2024, to report the discovery while walking in a field near 36 Street and Stoney Trail NE.
Police now confirm to 660 NewsRadio the remains belong to Abdul Mufti. His death is deemed suspicious.
The 71-year-old vanished in August 2023 and was last seen at his Falworth Way NE home.
At the time, according to multiple reports, he was renting a home from Shahbaz Ahmed. That man was killed earlier this month when he attacked a woman who fought back to save her own life in an Edgemont home.
Court records show Ahmed faced nearly a dozen serious charges in recent years, including allegations he held a senior at knifepoint in 2023. He was acquitted on all counts.
Police say homicide investigators have been working to identify suspects and are collecting additional evidence in Mufti’s death.
They are also working with the Crown to determine next steps.
One of Mufti’s daughters told 660 News previously that police found a lot of blood inside his home and unusual transactions on his credit card and bank account for things like luxury cars.
She said at the time, investigators told her they believed her father was no longer alive but had no answers to what fate he met.
