Calgary’s Danish community reacts to Trump’s rhetoric around Greenland

Reaction from Danish Canadians in Calgary to U.S. President Trumps rhetoric around Greenland. Phoenix Phillips reports.

On any given Wednesday, a group of men and women gather at the Danish Canadian Club in Calgary to play cards and engage in friendly conversation.

Some talk about the weather, others, about family. But as of late, the chit chat is about Greenland, specifically US President Trump’s rhetoric around this territory.

“We’re a member of NATO… they swore that they will stand behind us,” one man said. “He can shoot himself in the foot, but he can’t stab himself in the back.”

“That man is unbridled… he can do just about whatever he feels like doing because congress don’t want to stop him,” said another.

Even though the Greenlanders have their own self government, it is Denmark who is responsible for their foreign, defence and security policies.

So, when a foreign country threatens to take their land, these Danes say it’s down to other countries to hold a good hand.

“The United States are broke — period. And they need resources because they don’t have any resources themselves so that’s why he wants Canada, Greenland and anything else,” explained one man.

On Wednesday, Trump posted to his social media platform, Truth Social, saying in part: ‘Based on a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region.’

Either way, those at The Club still question the joker in the pack.

“I think he’s loco… I think there’s something wrong with his blooming head.”
