Calgary RV Show highlights price pressure from tariffs

The RV Adventure Sale & Show is happening in Calgary this weekend, and while deals are still available, higher prices could be just around the corner, all thanks to tariffs.

Dealers say tariffs are already starting to ripple through the RV industry, driving up the cost of materials used to build everything from travel trailers to motorhomes.

But Brandon Urban with Western RV Country says all the inventory on the floor at the show is still protected from those added costs, for now.

“Our biggest supplier, Forest River, they just sent out a memo here first week of the year announcing a few percentage point increase,” he explained. “So we’re expecting inventory ordered from this point on to be slightly affected by tariffs.”

Urban says future price increases should be capped at around five percent but that’s still enough to make shoppers think twice.

But, not everyone browsing the show floor is convinced prices are climbing.

CtityNews spoke with Brent, a potential buyer whose RV was recently stolen. He’s at the show to replace it, but says he’s seeing something different.

“In fact, I would think they’ve gone down. Yeah, I think some of these, well, depending on the unit you’re looking at, these bigger units are harder to sell,” he said.

From compact trailers to luxury motorhomes, prices at the show range from about $20,000 to well over $200,000.

And when it comes to travel plans, many buyers say they’re keeping things closer to home.

“I kind of just like sticking around Alberta,” said one woman.

“I just don’t feel comfortable at the border,” a man added. “There’s so many horror stories about people having problems getting in the States and then back in Canada.”

“Potentially, we have family over to Texas, so it’s potential that we can go down there,” a couple told CityNews. “But, I mean, we’re not thinking of it.”

The show features more than just RVs — there’s also including camper vans, travel gear, and accessories.

Dubbed Alberta’s biggest RV sale and show, the 55th edition runs at Calgary’s BMO Centre from Jan. 22 to 25.
