A report out Thursday says the Calgary Stampede generated $721 million in economic output across Alberta last year, up 33 per cent since the data was last analyzed in 2019.
The study, conducted by MNP, looked at the impact to the local, provincial, and federal economies spurred by Stampede operations and visitor spending tied to the annual event, as well as festivities held year-round on Stampede Park.
Nationally, the Stampede generated $872 million in economic output. Calgary itself saw a $664 million payoff, including nearly $191 million in wages and salaries to locals.
The Stampede says this output translates into filling hotels, restaurants, local businesses, attractions, taxis, and ride shares.
“These economic impact numbers are a clear reflection of the strong community support of The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, and continued demand for conferences, conventions, trade shows and community events both on Stampede Park and across the city,” said Joel Cowley, chief executive officer of the Calgary Stampede. “As a not-for-profit organization, the Calgary Stampede is proud to contribute meaningful economic value to our neighbours.
“This study highlights how our gathering place attracts investment and reinforces a resilient, competitive economy, while contributing to a vibrant community.”
Alisha Reynolds, the president and CEO of Tourism Calgary, says The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth is an anchor for the city’s tourism.
“We’re proud to work alongside the Calgary Stampede to attract visitors and events as we continue to grow the visitor economy and strengthen Calgary’s value proposition as a compelling, year-round destination for business, sport, and leisure,” she said.
The Stampede is made possible thanks to more than 3,000 volunteers, 1,200 year-round employees, and 3,500 seasonal employees.
The 2026 rendition runs July 3-12.
