Huge mess at Lake Louise linked to gender reveal party

When people visit Lake Louise, they’re usually there for views, but earlier this winter, that picturesque scene was interrupted by something completely out of place. Rayn Rashid reports.

Parks Canada is now investigating after a Reddit Post shows what appears to have been a gender reveal that left a mess of pink dye and tinsel scattered across the ice on Jan. 31.

The mess may no longer be visible, but a visitor from California, who often visits Lake Louise, says she spent an hour cleaning up the mess — posting her concerns on Reddit.

The California resident says in her post that she noticed a wide area of pink coloration and small bits of metallic confetti after finishing a snowshoe walk.

“I returned to the spot and spent an hour picking up all the metallic confetti so that the pieces would not end up in the lake when the ice thaws this summer,” her post reads.

After checking the Fairmont webcam archive, she says it appears a family set off confetti from 1:50 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan 31, “roughly 75 meters or so to the right of the boathouse.”

Parks Canada says an investigation is ongoing.

The Reddit poster agreed to a phone interview with CityNews on the condition that she would not appear on video or be named.

“There’s an area that was littered with pink colouration across the snow and just a couple of hundred pieces of small confetti, and I was pretty sure that was the remnants of a gender reveal,” she explained.

“I don’t understand how people take what is a happy moment in their family and then translate that into a celebration that actually trashes the environment. It is absolutely baffling to me and frustrating beyond measure.”

When people come to Lake Louise, they’re usually here for views, like the mountains, the lake, and the quiet, but now that picture has been interrupted by the alleged gender reveal.

“I don’t know why theyd wanna do that. I mean, without cleaning it up or anything, like I mean it’s one thing to make a mess, but it’s another to just leave everything on the ice, especially in a place like this. I mean, why would you wanna spoil this beautiful wilderness?” one visitor told CityNews.

“I’ve been coming to the mountains my whole life. And me? I like to follow the leave only footprints, take only pictures type of philosophy.”

The Reddit post also sparked a wider conversation about littering in National Parks.

“Imagine if all of us did that exact same thing all at once. It’s kind of a very individualistic concept to just leave your stuff behind,” another visitor said.

With the investigation ongoing, Parks Canada reminds visitors that littering in a National Park is strictly prohibited and could cost you a fine of up to $25,000.
