Woman dead, 22 others taken to hospital in Grand Prairie bus crash

Police say a woman is dead and 22 others were taken to hospital after a charter bus rolled over near Grande Prairie, Alta.

The single-vehicle crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, on Highway 43 about 1 kilometre west of the town of Debolt.

A 50-year-old woman, a resident of Grande Prairie, was declared dead on the scene.

Six passengers were taken to hospital with serious injuries by ambulance and their condition remained unknown. While 16 others who had minor injuries, were released after being taken to hospital.

The incident is still under investigation. But, road conditions were believed to be a factor.

“Initial investigation revealed that the bus hit the median and then rolled over once, coming back onto its wheels,” RCMP said in a statement Sunday.

According the RCMP, were 37 passengers in the bus, including adults and children. The passengers who were not injured were taken to Debolt fire hall.

The investigation continues.
