Review launched after RCMP officer shoots suspect in Okotoks

By CityNews Staff

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer shot and injured a suspect in Okotoks, south of Calgary, Wednesday afternoon.

RCMP received a report shortly after 2 p.m., asking for a wellness check on a man outside a home on Patterson Road.

When officers arrived, they began communicating with the suspect before there was a confrontation.

An RCMP officer then discharged their service pistol.

The police agency says additional resources were sent to contain the area, and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team was also deployed.

The Emergency Response Team negotiator was eventually able to negotiate the suspect’s surrender.

It was then discovered that the suspect was injured. He was taken to hospital with injuries and is expected to recover.

Due to the injuries sustained by the suspect, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigation.

Independent of that investigation, the RCMP will also be completing an internal review that will gather a full account of what happened during the incident.

RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review.

The Southern Alberta Regional Victim Serving Society is offering support to community members impacted by the incident.
