Noah, Olivia take top Alberta baby names in 2025 – yet again

By CityNews Staff

The names Noah and Olivia aren’t going anywhere in Alberta.

Those names have clearly made an impression on Alberta parents, as they’ve both taken the top spots once again — this time for 2025.

There were 259 newborn boys named Noah last year, and 173 newborn girls named Olivia.

Noah, the top boy name, has held the title for seven years, while Olivia took home the top girl’s name for the 13th year in a row.

Amelia was the next most popular name among girls, which reclaimed second place from the previous year, followed by a tie between Emma and Sophia. Violet rounded out the top five.

For the boys, Theodore leaped from 2024’s fourth-place spot to claim second, followed by Oliver, Henry, and a tie between Jack and Lucas. Teddy, a shortened name for Theodore, was chosen by parents 44 times.

“We’re proud to welcome the youngest members of our population to Alberta’s family. We’ll continue working to make Alberta a place where they can succeed and someday start families of their own,” said Dale Nally, the minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction.

The province says the name choices also reflect the impact of Alberta’s film and television industry, along with noting inspiration from popular culture, such as Khaleesi after the character from “Game of Thrones,” Zendaya after the actress, and Beckham after the notable football player. The premier’s name was chosen 11 times.

Other names include Dua (11), Billie (6), Taylor (5), Zohran (4), and Ulysses (2).

According to the government data, there were over 52,000 registered births in 2025, and over 14,500 unique names were chosen.

Ethan held the longest-reigning name in Alberta for nine years from 2001 to 2009, followed by Liam, which held the top spot from 2010 to 2016. The next longest-reigning girl’s name was Jessica from 1990 to 1995.
