Winter makes comeback in Calgary, storm warning now lifted

A blessing for some, a nightmare for others, as a blanket of snow blasts into Calgary with a vengeance. Phoenix Phillips reports.

Winter is back in Calgary after a mild couple of weeks, with plenty of blowing snow and freezing cold temperatures hitting the city on Tuesday.

Environment Canada was calling for hazardous driving conditions with 15 to 25 centimetres of snow expected, and local amounts possible reaching 30 centimetres in some areas.

The snowfall is expected to taper off late Tuesday. A winter storm warning has now been lifted.

The return to winter driving caused chaos on city streets with Calgary police saying they responded to nearly 150 collisions from midnight to 4p.m.

Road crews with the City of Calgary prepared equipment and materials on Monday ahead of launching its snow priority plan. It includes applying anti-icing to intersections, bridges, and hills.

The city said crews were applying materials as needed before the snow started falling, then they activated a priority plan, starting with major roadways within 0 to 18 hours after snowfall. Sidewalks, LRT platforms, and other priority pathways were to be cleared within 24 hours.

When it comes to Calgary Transit, snow detours were in effect for all bus routes Tuesday morning. Calgary Transit school bus routes remained in place.

The snowfall also led to delays and cancellations at YYC International Airport — affecting both arrivals and departures.

Additionally, the Alberta Motor Association says the wait time for a tow was three hours on Tuesday, and a battery boost was half that time.

Environment Canada called for the snowfall to end in the evening with a 30 per cent chance of flurries through the night and low of -23 C, feeling more like -32 with the windchill.

The frigid temperatures will stick around Wednesday with a high of -20 C expected and wind chill near -33.

Things are expected to warm up slightly heading into the weekend, with a high of -16 C expected on Thursday, followed by -10 C on Friday.
