Man charged in six extortion attempts that threatened violence against Calgary woman

A Calgary man is facing several charges, accused of attempting to extort a woman he knew for money, and threatening violence against her if she didn’t comply.

Police say she came forward in September 2025 to report numerous threats to her safety and multiple extortion attempts that happened throughout 2024.

An investigation was launched and police began an operation in late 2025 to arrest those responsible.

Investigators say on six separate occasions between August and October 2024 the victim was contacted by the offenders, who she knew, demanding money and valuables. She was threatened with various acts of violence if she didn’t give in, police add.

Jaspreet Gill, 37, has been charged with six counts of extortion. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 10.

Also as a result of the operation, but unrelated to the extortions, 28-year-old Harpreet Gill of Calgary, has also been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, one count of fraud under $5,000, and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. She is set to appear in court on April 6.

“We understand how deeply these incidents affect not only the victims, but also the broader community and their sense of safety,” said Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski of the Calgary Police Service General Investigations Unit. “We want the public to know that our officers are committed to thoroughly investigating these crimes and will continue to hold those responsible accountable.”

CPS says although this incident targeted a member of the South Asian community, at this time, it appears to have occurred in isolation and is not connected to any other extortions that have recently been reported.

Calgary police and ALERT are continuing a collaborative investigation a series of extortions targeting the South Asian community.
