A disturbing video circulating online that appears to show a gunman firing into a Calgary home is now part of a broader police investigation into a pair of extortion‑related shootings over the weekend.
Calgary police confirmed Monday they are investigating two shootings they believe are connected to an ongoing series of extortions targeting members of the city’s South Asian community.
“We should all be concerned whenever there is gunfire in the streets,” said CPS Deputy Chief Asif Rashid in an update on Monday. “Many of these incidents are happening in the evening or overnight hours when many of the homes are occupied.”
The first incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, when two suspects fired several shots into a home on Saddleridge Drive NE before fleeing in a white sedan.
Nearly 24 hours later, around 12:10 a.m. on Monday, a suspect approached a home on Savanna Park NE and fired multiple rounds before running from the scene.
A video circulating online appears to show the Savanna shooting from the shooter’s point of view.
After CityNews contacted police about the footage, the service would only confirm they were investigating the Savanna shooting. A CityNews reporter who visited the street found a house with visible bullet holes that appears to match the one shown in the video.
In Monday’s update, Rashid said investigators are examining the footage closely.
“We are aware of that footage. I have seen the footage,” Rashid said. “Our investigators, at a preliminary analysis, believe that there might be some nexus from that video to the shooting that happened in Savanna this morning.”
“However, until we do a forensic examination and we chase down some of the evidence that’s associated with the video, we can’t conclusively say that at this time.”
No injuries were reported in either shooting, and police say it is not yet known whether the same suspects were involved.
Shootings linked to extortion
Investigators believe both incidents are tied to a growing number of extortion incidents targeting South Asians in Calgary.
Since the beginning of 2025, police say 28 extortions linked to the series have been reported in the city, including 13 shootings.
Ward 5 Coun. Raj Dhaliwal said the latest violence is deeply troubling for residents.
“I am deeply concerned by the recent shooting in the Savanna community,” Dhaliwal said in a statement. “Public safety is a top priority. Our office is in close contact with the Calgary Police Service and we are awaiting their official findings as the investigation continues.”
“It’s important that we allow police to do their work and avoid speculation.”
Earlier this month, Calgarians gathered at a community town hall to address the surge in extortion‑related violence, which has disproportionately affected South Asian families and business owners.
Calgary police members, along with officers from the Edmonton Police Service and Alberta RCMP, attended a meeting in B.C. last week where investigators from across Canada “came together to discuss this issue that is impacting communities nationwide.”
