One person is dead, and another has been rushed to hospital following a head-on crash on Highway 1 east of Calgary on Wednesday.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a crash in the westbound lanes of the highway near Range Road 284, between Calgary and Chestermere, around 6:15 a.m.
RCMP Cpl Troy Savinkoff says two vehicles were heading in opposite directions before one drove into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the other vehicle.
“I don’t know if that’s because they crossed the meridian as part of losing control, or was driving in the wrong lane to begin with,” says Savinkoff. “I’m not sure of that detail yet.”
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
RCMP have identified the person killed as a 38-year-old man from Calgary.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
All westbound lanes on Highway 1 east of Calgary were closed for several hours. The lanes reopened around 10:30 a.m.
Environment Canada released a fog advisory for the Calgary area Wednesday morning, saying it’s causing “near zero visibility” in many areas, but will dissipate sometime in the afternoon.
Savinkoff could not confirm if the fog played a role in the crash.
