Alberta drivers and passengers not wearing a seatbelt are about to face a significantly higher penalty.
The Alberta RCMP says the fine for anyone in a moving vehicle without a seatbelt will rise from $162 to $211 on Friday.
That’s an increase of 30 per cent.
“Buckling up, and ensuring other occupants are safely restrained, should be your first priority when entering your vehicle,” said RCMP Sgt. Darrin Turnbull in a news release.
“Breaking occupants restraint laws may not only cost a ticket but your life. While airbags offer protection in collisions, they are designed to supplement the safety features provided by seatbelts.”
The Alberta RCMP says it issued 2,338 tickets due to seatbelt and restraint-related offences in 2025.
