A 18-year-old man was taken to hospital Tuesday morning with life-altering injuries after he was hit by a vehicle while trying to change a tire.
Calgary police say it happened around 8:45 a.m. on Nose Hill Drive NW and Tuscany Hill NW, near the Home Depot.
The teen was outside his vehicle, a 2011 Mazda 3S, attempting to change a tire in the left hand lane heading eastbound, when he was hit from behind by another vehicle, a 2016 Subaru Impreza, travelling in the same direction.
Bystanders intervened and helped to provide medical aid.
Police say the teen’s condition has been upgraded to serious, but stable.

The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 40s, stayed at the scene.
Police say the passenger of the vehicle who hit the man was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Acting Sgt. Mike Kornelson says this is a reminder to make sure it is safe to get out of your vehicle, especially on a busy road.
“We like to just advise drivers that if you do have a mechanical issue with your vehicle, or you need to change a tire, that you ensure you stop in a safe area: So into the shoulder, away from traffic, and have your four-way flashers on,” he explained. “And if you don’t deem it safe, just stay in your vehicle. You can always wait for a tow truck to show up, or a secondary vehicle to help block you so you’re safe if you have to get out of your vehicle to make any fixes to your vehicle.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
Kornelson says the cause of the incident is under investigation, but it’s possible sun glare played a factor.
Police say it’s not believed speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in this collision.
Nose Hill Drive NW was closed in both directions for the investigation. The road reopened around 1:30 p.m.
