Warm, windy weather on tap for Calgary ahead of first day of Spring

By CityNews Staff

Calgarians can expect warm and windy weather in the city over the next few days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says St. Patrick’s Day Tuesday could hit 18 C. But, the chinook winds will be gusting.

“It will be quite blustery,” said ECCC meteorologist Heather Pimiskern.” Just because temperatures are warm this week doesn’t mean that we should be changing winter tires or putting away the snow gear just yet.”

The forecast says it could get as high as 80 km/h this morning before dipping down to 60 km/h in the afternoon.

Warmth will continue Wednesday.

ECCC says it will hit 17 C and high winds will continue, gusting to 60 km/h.

Thursday and Friday are also expected to hit 17 C.

The Spring Equinox is Friday, March 20, which officially signals more hours of daylight.

But, winter-like weather could return by the time the weekend comes. Snow is forecast for Sunday alongside a high of just 1 C.

“We’re looking at another system coming in on Saturday that will plunge us back into more typical March weather for this time of the year,” said Pimiskern.

It will likely warm up Sunday and Monday, with forecasts of 5 C and 6 C, respectively.

Avalanche Canada has increased its danger rating in Banff and K-Country this week, warning backcountry users to stay off avalanche terrain under this warm, wet weather pattern.

For those that suffer from weather-related headaches or migraine, The Calgary Foothills Primary Care Network recommends watching your caffeine intake, getting regular exercise, and getting a good night’s sleep.
