Teen charged in robbery involving machete at Airdrie McDonald’s

A teenage boy is facing charges after a set of bizarre instances involving a machete and McDonald’s in Airdrie.

On Tuesday, around 12:30 p.m., a youth was confronted by another youth armed with a machete at the McDonald’s restaurant on Edmonton Trail.

The youth was then robbed, but not injured.

This incident wasn’t reported to police.

On Wednesday, the victim and a group of friends confronted the suspect at the same McDonald’s about the theft of property the day before.

During that confrontation, the suspect pulled out a large machete from his waistband and started waving it at the group, according to police.

No one was hurt during this incident.

A restaurant employee called 911 and the suspect fled to the nearby tri-school area.

Airdrie RCMP issued a temporary secure and hold order for the three schools in that area, while officers looked for the suspect.

Officers found the suspect in an alley near Centre Avenue and Virginia Street and after a brief chase, he was arrested without incident.

Police also recovered the machete which the suspect had tried to ditch.

A 16-year-old boy from Airdrie has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, and four counts of failure to comply with a sentence order under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
