Six Calgary riverfront lots wiped out in 2013 floods up for sale

Your dream of having a home along one of Calgary’s rivers might just come true after the province announced Monday the listing of 6 sites. Phoenix Phillips has the details.

Completed flood mitigation work in Calgary means some properties wiped out by water in the 2013 floods are now up for sale.

Six riverfront lots on Roxboro Road SW have been listed by Alberta Infrastructure, ranging in price from $1.75 million to $3 million. The parcels are designed for residential development.

June 2013 was devastating for southern Alberta as a result of catastrophic flooding across the Rocky Mountains and Foothills that caused a rapid rise to the levels of the Elbow and Bow Rivers.

During that time, over 100,000 people were evacuated, major infrastructure was damaged, and entire neighbourhoods along the Elbow River flooded.

After that, the provincial government began to implement a long-term flood mitigation strategy. As part of that strategy, 17 properties in areas deemed ‘high-risk’ were bought by the province.

Since that time, major flood mitigation work has taken place, thanks to funding from the province and the City of Calgary.

The most notable of those projects and the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir, located west of the city in Springbank.

It’s designed to temporarily store floodwater during extreme rainfall and reduces downstream flood risk to communities in Calgary.

During major storms, water from the Elbow is diverted into the reservoir, where it is stored until river levels go down and it can be safely released.

Because of this, the lots up for sale are no longer considered to be in the floodway.

The community of Roxboro is now protected to a one-in-200 year level for overland flooding.
