Several people were evacuated from their homes after a fire broke out at a multi-unit building in Calgary’s northeast early Monday morning.

Crews were called to the home on 34 Avenue NE and Edmonton Trail NE in Highland Park just before 4 a.m.

“When we arrived, crews were faced with heavy fire and smoke from the exterior. We were able to quickly stabilize and control the situation using hand lines and attacking the fire in an offensive way from the exterior,” explained Battalion Chief Bruce Barrs. “We gained access quickly as well, and then continued to extinguish any fire from the interior as well, at the same time conducting a search.”

Barrs says one woman was taken to hospital in stable condition. Seven other people were assessed by paramedics on scene but not transported.

Two dogs were evacuated from the building. However, several cats didn’t make it out.

Fire crews have since brought the blaze under control and extinguished it.

There is extensive damage to the building and all of the residents will be displaced, according to Barrs.

No information has been released on the cause of the fire.
