Morning snowstorm causes chaos on Calgary roads

From a winter storm Wednesday morning, to a kiss of spring by the afternoon — a snapshot of the chaos caused by Calgary's weather mood swing. Phoenix Phillips reports.

A snowfall warning for Calgary has ended but not before the falling snow wreaked havoc on the city’s morning commute, prompting police to advise against travel.

Drivers across Calgary contended with poor conditions, though traffic cameras show snow levels varying widely from the north side of the city to the south.

ECCC says when all is said and done, 10 to 15 centimetres could fall in parts of the city. With more snow in the north and west.

The snowfall warning advised of a band of heavy snow hanging over the Bow Valley, through northern Calgary, and in eastern Rocky View County near Dalroy.

The warning was lifted around 1:30 p.m. and the snow is expected to further ease throughout the day.

Calgary police say officers responded to several collisions during the storm, particularly on the north sections of Stoney Trail and Deerfoot Trail.

From midnight to 12 p.m., officers responded to 173 crashes, including 29 injury collisions and 15 hit-and-run crashes.

Travel at YYC International Airport is also being impacted. The arrivals and departures board has numerous delays and cancellations on it well into the evening on Wednesday.

Those planning to catch a flight from are advised to check its status before heading to the airport.
