21-year-old charged in Calgary extortion shooting

The Calgary Police Service has arrested a 21-year-old in connection to the series of ongoing South-Asian extortions, the second extortion-related arrest in a week. Joel Mendelson reports.

A 21-year-old man is the latest to face charges in an ongoing South Asian extortion investigation in Calgary.

Calgary police say on the morning of Saturday, March 7, officers watched a vehicle commit a traffic violation on Falconridge Boulevard NE near Taracove Estate Drive NE.

Officers pulled the vehicle over and recognized it matched the description of a suspect vehicle thought to be involved in a March 4 extortion-related shooting in Saddleridge.

The vehicle was seized and officers pulled evidence believed to be linked to the shooting.

That evidence was analyzed in the following weeks, police say, and was connected to information from previous incidents and other suspects,.

Jaskaran Singh has been charged with discharging a firearm with intent.

He is the second individual to face charges in connection with extortion crimes in the city.

Last week, 45-year-old Rana Cheema was charged, accused by police in a series of extortion attempts, including making threats to a daycare outside the city.

Since last January, there have been 41 extortion attempts in Calgary. Of those, 18 involved shootings at homes, businesses or vehicles.

Police in Calgary have also seen victims receive threats through international phone calls and social media platforms.

No injuries connected to extortion crimes in Calgary have been reported to this point.
