Third-alarm fire breaks out at SE Calgary commercial warehouse

By CityNews Staff

Sixty firefighters and 25 fire trucks were needed to put out a blaze at a commercial warehouse in Calgary’s southeast Monday afternoon.

The fire department says crews were called around 3:40 p.m. to 56 Avenue SE near Barlow Trail SE for reports of a structure fire.

When they arrived, workers were exiting the building. No injuries were reported and all employees are accounted for.

They reported the fire started in a storage room and was attempted to be brought under control by dry chemical extinguishers, but that didn’t work.

Firefighters stretched multiple hose lines to try to knock down the fire, but were met with heavy smoke that made it difficult to see and find the source of the flames.

A large area fan was brought on scene to try and remove some of the smoke while crews continued with hoses.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says low visibility, type, and location of the contents on fire made it hard to apply water directly to the source, which resulted in crews being on scene for several hours.

Warehouse workers helped firefighters with building access, layout, and heavy equipment.

ATCO Gas, Enmax, Calgary police, and paramedics also attended the scene.

Gas to the building was shut off as a precaution.

A fire investigator attended the scene but was unable to process the area due to heavy smoke and low visibility. They will head back to the scene when the fire is completely extinguished.
