Calgary police have nabbed a suspect as part of a stolen merchandise trafficking investigation.

Police say a Calgary man has been busted for allegedly selling high end athletic wear he stole from a local store, online.

Last month, security with Lululemon reached out to police to flag an individual selling stolen merchandise on Facebook Marketplace for roughly half of the price. Calgary police declined to say which store in the city the merchandise was stolen from.

A search warrant was executed at a home on March 28, where officers found new Lululemon clothing, a significant number of forged identity documents, and 17 pieces of stolen mail.

23-year-old Tyler Anthony Chasses is charged with 23 crimes: one count of possession of stolen property, one count of trafficking stolen property, one count of possession of proceeds of crime, two counts of possession of stolen mail, and 18 counts of possession of forged documents.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Investigators are emphasizing that retail theft is not a victimless crime, and has real consequences for business owners and affects the overall sense of safety in the community.

Police say the best thing Calgarians can do when buying items secondhand online is to ask the right questions: Who are they buying the items from? Does it seem odd that they are selling so much clothing? Does the clothing still have the tags on? Why are new items so cheap?

Also, if something seems off or doesn’t make sense, it’s best to walk away, and if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud is asked to report the in incident to police or CrimeStoppers.

Information on this case can be provided to Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
