Shotgun, fentanyl seized during arrest of Calgary arson suspect

A Calgary man is facing a string of charges after police seized weapons and drugs while arresting him as part of an arson investigation.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the southwest community of Bridlewood around 3 a.m. on Apr. 1 where a detached garage was found on fire.

Investigators determined two people had entered the backyard, deliberately set the garage on fire and tried to set the house on fire before fleeing in a waiting vehicle.

The getaway vehicle was identified as stolen.

Officers later found the vehicle and arrested a suspect. Police say several items were seized from the vehicle, including a shotgun, fentanyl, a hatchet and clothing believed to match what one of the arson suspects wore during the incident.

Michael Keith Caseley, 49, has been charged with arson with disregard for human life, possession of drugs, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, driving while disqualified and several traffic‑related offences.

Police say there will be additional weapons charges after the examination of the seized shotgun.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call Calgary police at 403‑266‑1234 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
