The Government of Alberta says it will be investing $400 million to create over 1,100 new continuing care home spaces across the province.
The UCP government made the announcement on Wednesday, saying it is the largest continuing care expansion in the province’s history.
“Albertans deserve to age with dignity in the communities they call home,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services. “By expanding continuing care capacity across Alberta, we are creating more spaces, more support and more peace of mind for seniors and families while building a stronger, more sustainable care system for generations to come.”
The investment is reportedly the first of billions of dollars to be made towards building new continuing care spaces, with the province noting that Alberta is seeing increasing demand for assisted living and continuing care as the population grows and ages at an unprecedented pace.
“Alberta’s continuing care sector is thrilled to see this record investment in increasing continuing care capacity,” said Feisal Keshavjee, the chair of Alberta Continuing Care Association. “These projects will make a meaningful difference for families across the province, creating new places for people to live, receive care and stay connected to the communities they know.”
Three projects are set for Calgary and three for Edmonton, including five others in Alberta. The list of projects supported through the funding can be found here.
