‘It’s really intimate’: Illusionist Darcy Oake takes the stage in Calgary this week

Illusionist Darcy Oake says there are two kinds of audience members—people who want to know, and people who don’t.
“You’re either a skeptic who sits there and tries to figure out everything, or you’re on the other side of the coin, which is… just a believer,” he says.
He says designing his show is about appealing to both sides of the coin.
Oake is on stage in Calgary at the Ace Casino Westin Calgary Airport on Friday, May 8 – taking his big show to a close-up level.
He is best known internationally for large-scale stage illusions, appearing on television and touring with productions that favour classic spectacle. But Oake says this stop is different.
“It’s really intimate,” he says. “Obviously, reconfiguring sort of a hotel space to be kind of like a mini-theatre creates a different dynamic and a different environment, which is really cool.”

He says it is rare his shows get this casual and one-on-one, “It’s not, like, necessarily the same as, like, you’re in a theatre show where every cue is bang on, and it’s so polished. This is, you know, a little bit more kind of grassroots unplugged.”
His production and crew are always ready to adapt plans based on venue size and limitations, but Oake says he is also constantly evolving his content to stay ahead of the curve.
“Misdirection isn’t, like, necessarily fully choreographed. Like, it might work differently in one situation than in another… So it’s sort of like this song and dance where you try to get in this pocket where everybody in the crew understands exactly where we’re going … unspoken and in real time.”
He says in a day and age where Google can solve or spoil any trick, he has to take his misdirection to another level, expecting people to try and figure it out.
“We have to be sort of more on top of it and understand that people are going to do that and then try to use that to our advantage, if you will… So it’s a psychological song and dance,” he saus.
