Spring snowstorm threatens May long weekend travel

The unofficial start of summer may feel more like a blast of winter, complicating travel plans for Calgarians heading into the May long weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of significant snowfall in the mountain parks and Foothills that could reach Calgary by Saturday morning.

The snow is expected to begin Friday night or early Saturday, moving eastward toward the city throughout the morning. The agency says the heaviest snow will fall Saturday.

“Showers will transition through the overnight on Saturday, becoming snow showers,” says 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield, adding up to 15 centimetres is possible in the city.

Environment Canada says accumulation totals are still uncertain, but there could be up to 20 centimetres that fall over higher elevations and along Highway 1 west of Calgary.

Friday will see a high around 15 C, but temperatures will fall on Saturday with a daytime high around 4 C. The double-digit temperatures are expected to return heading into next week.

Motorists heading toward the mountains for the weekend may want to prepare for winter-like conditions, slower travel, and rapidly changing weather.
