A progress update presented to Calgary’s Infrastructure and Planning Committee on Tuesday shows construction of Scotia Place remains on track for a fall 2027 opening.

City officials say major excavation was completed in 2024, foundations were finished this year, and structural, exterior, and interior work is now underway.

“We’re pleased but we’re not there yet, we got still got a year and a half to go, so it’s every day is a challenge,” says Bob Hunter, Project Committee Member with the City of Calgary.

Public-access features, including the community arena and indoor plaza, are advancing alongside the main event centre. The report says 37 per cent of the project budget has been spent.

“The construction sequencing is very complicated in a project this size, and so you’re constantly working within those parameters to ensure that there is no slippage in that budget, and you know we’re 95 per cent now committed on buying out the project, so most of the challenges financially are behind us,” says Hunter.

Officials acknowledge ongoing pressure from rising labour and material costs but say mitigation strategies are in place to help keep the project on schedule and within Council’s approved investment framework.

Scotia Place is being built just north of the Saddledome and is scheduled to open in September 2027. It is expected to host Calgary’s games during the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, which the city will co‑host with Edmonton and Prague.
