A man allegedly hurled racial slurs at a neighbour for weeks before stabbing him in the face in southwest Calgary last month.
Calgary police were called to Woodview Drive near 17 Street SW in the community of Woodlands around 9:30 p.m. on May 22, after a man was attacked outside his home.
Investigators say the victim, a man in his 40s, had been subjected to weeks of racial remarks from a neighbour, who again used slurs during the confrontation before stabbing him twice in the face.
The victim went inside and called police. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since recovered.
The Hate Crime Prevention Team was brought in due to the alleged racist comments made during the incident. Investigators determined the assault was motivated by hate.
Police have charged Emilio Francesco Pedicino, 41, of Calgary, with assault with a weapon. He will appear in court in July
Hate motivation doesn’t lead to extra charges, but courts will look at any proof of hate after someone is found guilty of a crime. If a judge decides the offence was motivated by hate, the judge can give a tougher sentence.
