Construction underway on large affordable housing development in SE Calgary

Officials gathering for the groundbreaking of a record-breaking Calgary housing development on Thursday.

Crews broke ground Thursday on a massive affordable housing project that is the largest in Calgary Housing’s history.

The Southview development is located just off of International Avenue (17 Avenue SE), between 33 and 34 streets, and will eventually provide homes for more than 1,000 Calgarians.

“Today is about keeping a promise that Calgary has been making for decades, that this city must remain a place where all Calgarians regardless of income can find stable housing to build their lives,” says Bo Jiang, interim President and CEO of Calgary Housing.

The project is funded by all three levels of government and will operate within Calgary Housing’s mixed‑income model, offering a range of rents. The city says units priced just below market will help subsidize more affordable units and maintenance.

The development sits on land that previously held provincial social housing.

“Critically needed for long-term stable housing for families,” says Mayor Jeromy Farkas during Thursday’s ground-breaking event. “I grew up just a couple blocks away and the fact that I’m coming home here to build some homes, damn it’s a good day.”

Phase 1 of the project will include a mid‑rise building with 250 units that range from one to four bedrooms, expected to serve more than 600 people. The project will also include live‑work units, co‑working spaces, a residents’ lounge, a rooftop patio, secure bike storage and landscaped outdoor areas.

Construction of Phase 1 is expected to finish in early 2028, with residents moving in soon after. Phase 2 is still being planned.
