The Canadian federal government is funding 17 clean-energy projects across Alberta and Saskatchewan, it said in an announcement Saturday.
Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson says Ottawa’s $26 million funding will modernize energy systems and infrastructure.
About 10 projects will focus on energy storage, solar and wind energy development, interprovincial electricity transmission planning, Indigenous-led clean energy projects and workforce development.
Hodgson says the strategy is to grow and connect Canada’s electricity grid, along with doubling its capacity by 2050 to meet the “expected rise in demand” with affordable, reliable, clean power.
He says energy is the backbone of Canada’s economy.
“We are truly making good on our promise to Canadians to not only be an energy superpower, but to do it in a pragmatic, sustainable way,” he said.
He says the funding will go towards modernizing energy systems and infrastructure, as well as reducing emissions.
This comes on the heels of the pipeline proposal announced Friday.
Smith said the Alberta government is partnering with the federally owned Trans Mountain Corp. and Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline to build and operate what has officially been labelled the West Coast Pipeline.
The province’s submission package says the project will follow along the path of the current Trans Mountain pipeline, running from Bruderheim, northeast of Edmonton, to a terminal in Delta, B.C., just south of Vancouver.
It’s expected to deliver over one million barrels per day, and see tankers ship it to Asian markets.
