Fatal RCMP shooting near Irricana under ASIRT investigation

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot and killed as officers responded to a domestic disturbance in central Alberta.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says Airdire RCMP responded to a call around 6:20 p.m. on July from a woman reporting a disturbance involving her boyfriend at a home near Irricana.

When two officers arrived, they heard shouting inside the home before the woman came out the front door.

Police stayed outside and called for the man to come out, according to ASIRT. He eventually appeared in the doorway after several minutes and started walking toward the officers while holding what looked like a handgun.

One officer fired multiple shots, striking the man.

Officers provided first aid and called EMS, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. ASIRT says the encounter was recorded on both officers’ body‑worn cameras.

The ASIRT investigation is ongoing and no other information as been made available.

The police watchdog is called in to investigation any interactions involving police officers that result in serious injury or death.
